"It is a big one for us. It would be terrible to not win that," said Taggart after the third qualifying race, the 2.4km race to finish in Beijing and which ended in a nailbiting tie after five minutes. "It would be terrible, but a qualifying place from us would be fantastic. The whole team is really looking forward to winning it."
The Australian coach believed that the first qualifying race was a key test for his team and that it would serve as a powerful rallying point for the year in a race that the world champions are keen to go back to at the start of February. "The first qualifying race has been a big test for us as the team's training went on and we needed to know that we could compete in it," said Taggart, who has already shown signs that the team can push the boundaries on the track when it comes to pace and braking.
"And I think we're more confident, I don't know if we could be a bit more confident. But it's a great first qualifying race. And, for us, it's the big test. We've got to deliver another strong performance from ourselves, then we move on."
Taggart said that the Australian team had been testing some cars on the final day of the first qualifying race to see where they could improve on, before adding that they had taken more risks in qualifying than they had in qualifying this year.
"We just went with what we thought we could do best," said Taggart. "I think we got better every time. The first race was a big test for us. I think that test, in this case, will serve us really well. But in the longer term, our focus, is to stay here at the end of this season on the top level and make the most of this year's experience we have.
"I think when you're in the final two weeks of practice you come in with the mindset of what is it to keep going at this level, it's the best challenge, the biggest challenge. So I think that's why every single session we really looked to improve and come out of the first day with the focus of improving that session."
